FAQ

Q : My cd copy continues to ask me to insert the original cd ?
A : see manuals, otherwise download insektor

Q : Why do you promote Patin-Couffin access Layer instead of ASPI ?
A : ( PC is abbreviation of Patin-Couffin access layer )
* ASPI is a registered trademark of ADAPTEC, which mean that we must pay to use or include ASPI in our software, and can't guarantee we will have the right to use it indefinitely.
* ASPI is UNRELIABLE, because there is more ASPI distribution than we can count. Some are very serious and stable, other introduces bugs and problems we can't cope with.
* ASPI does not provide a mechanism to obtain exclusive access on a given drive. this is needed to have a reliable read/write operation
* Under Windows 95/98/ME, A very unstable a buggy ASPI layer is shipped.
* Most ASPI layers are not plug and play, does not support hotplug and doesn't see units on USB, // or firewire buses.
* PC Layer act faster on drive. It will NOT make your drive running faster, but it'll reduce the processor time payload of an extraction / writing process - so you computer could still be used to other tasks as well.
* PC layer is 100% developped by us, which mean that, if we find a bug, we can correct it.

Q: What is the required configuration?
A:
- PC: Pentium (or comparable), 32 Mb RAM, big HD (for image files).
- OS: Windows 95B/98/Me, NT 4.0 (SP3 or higher), 2000, XP ... we highly recommend using Windows 2000.
- CD Reader: Almost any reader is able to do the job.
- CD Writer: A supported CD writer is needed. Some restrictions apply. Click HERE for a list of known cd writers.
- ASPI layer must be installed - ASPI layer is included by default in Windows 9x, ME. For Windows NT & 2000 or XP, we include a third-party ASPI layer from Poikosoft.

Q: You said that Plextor drives support DAO PW mode, but I get an error. Why?
A: Although Plextor drives support DAO PW modes perfectly, none of these drives support TEST MODE with DAO. This always ends up with a command sequence error (05 2C 00). It can't be avoided. To make tests on a Plextor drive in DAO mode, you MUST use a CD-RW, and uncheck the test mode switch.

Q: What are the requirements to produce a perfect 1:1 CD backup?
A: It depends on the type of CD you are trying to backup. Here is a summary:

CD Type Use Reading / writing mode Comments
AUDIO CD ANY / ANY No precaution to take, any writing mode will be OK.
PC CD-ROM without copy protection ANY / ANY No precaution to take, any writing mode will be OK.
PC-CDROM or PSX CD with SECUROM copy protection READ WITH SUBCODES / WRITE WITH DAO PQ or DAO PW or DAO TEAC

The protection scheme resides in non-standard subcodes. When reading, at least subcodes PQ shall be extracted. When writing, only DAO modes can write non-standard PQ subcodes.

PC CD-ROM with SAFEDISC 1 copy protection

ANY READ - Alternative read mode will be much much faster

RAW WRITE - Any DAO or SAO RAW mode will be OK

The protection scheme uses sectors with modified data, which CD readers interprete as unreadable. CD readers usually slowdown dramatically on this kind of sectors, because they try to re-read the same erroneous sector several times. Alternative read mode turns off error identification, thus avoiding the slowdown, but at the cost of an increased error rate.

The writing should be done with a mode that is able to reproduce the erroneous sectors exactly as they have been read, therefore a RAW writing mode is needed. If available, SAO RAW mode should be preferred.

PC-CDROM with Safedisc 2 copy protection Same as Safedisc 1, but some restrictions apply. Safedisc 2 is a very hardware orientated CD copy protection. In addition to all the Safedisc 1 tricks, SD 2 uses a mathematical sequence of data which requires a very well contrasted CD to be read correctly. The explanation is far beyond the scope of this FAQ, the result is that only a few CD readers can read the backup of these mathematical sectors. Both a good reader and a good CD writer are required to produce a working backup, and a SAO RAW writing mode should be preferred, as SAO writing offers more contrast on the backup CD than DAO.
AUDIO CD with Graphics READ with PW subcodes / Write in SAO RW or DAO PW mode The graphics (or the karaoke songs) on this kind of CD lay in subcodes R to W. So, you must both read and write RW subcodes to obtain a 1:1 backup.
Selfboot DREAMCAST backup ANY / ANY

DREAMCAST originals are GD-ROM's, and a public unit that is able to read/burn GD-ROM's directly doesn't exist (yet).

DREAMCAST backups are standard CD's. If they are self-bootable, they contain two sessions. So, any CD writer with multisession support will do the trick!

Q: When I try to use a SAO mode, I get an error type 05 26 00 [Illegal request ...] or something. Why?
A: In SAO mode, Blindwrite must issue a description for the CD, called CUE SHEET, first. But, if the CUE SHEET doesn't meet the standard requirements of your CD unit, an error is returned and the writer rejects the CUE SHEET. If you try to write a non-standard CUE SHEET, your writer might systematically reject, or write erroneous data onto the CD.
SAO COOKED uses the most standard CUE SHEET formatting, any CD writer should accept these (as long as the CD TOC to reproduce is valid, and no overburning is needed).

Q: My TEAC 55 Unit is not supported. Why?
A: The TEAC 55 is supported now. It uses a TEAC specific writing mode, called DAO TEAC. This writing mode allows RAW & SPECIAL SUBCODE writing, but leaves the CD TOC generation to the writer itself. So, this mode is just a little less powerful than the DAO PW writing mode, and this mode is good enough to produce 1:1 backups of most protected CD's.

Q: Can I write an image currently in extraction
A: Yes, this is possible since Blindread 3.0.1.0 / Blindwrite 0.99.1.0 - But it's hazardous if you don't have two SCSI units (READER + WRITER)

Q: My writer isn't validated. Will it work?
A: It may work, or it may NOT work.
You may try to use your unit AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Try the available writing mode in the following order
* DAO PW
* DAO PQ
* SAO RAW
* SAO RAW RW
* SAO COOKED

If a given mode is not properly supported, you most probably get an error message when the writing is started. In some case, the writing process completes without any error reported, but the resulting CD can't be read (is empty).

Q: Can I write multissession CD's?
A: YES - Multisession is supported in every writing mode.

Q: How to uninstall the "patin-couffin" drivers?
A1: You can uninstall the drivers in Blindread or Blindwrite, the same way you activate it. It is in the dialog where you set up the ASPI layer.
A2: If you have trouble with Blindwrite/Blindread Suite, follow these steps like for any hardware in your computer.
My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager -> Other devices , select Patin-couffin, and click the 'remove' button (the red cross) to remove the driver, click the uninstall button in the action bar

Q: Can I install Blindwrite Suite under windows XP?
A1: Yes!! Even if you have a dialog about compatibility issues, you can install and enjoy Blindwrite Suite under Windows XP, we tested it.
